This senior legal role plays a pivotal part in the delivery, oversight and development of Legal Aid services, combining high-level decision-making with hands-on legal practice.

The Legal Aid Counsel delivers legal advice and representation across family, civil and criminal matters, provides authoritative guidance on legislation and policy, and contributes to law reform, staff development, public legal information, and quality assurance. The postholder will be expected to assess complex applications, approve duty counsel claims, support the Legal Aid Clinic and Listed Attorneys, and provide daily guidance to staff. Acting for the Director when required, the role ensures effective data management, service continuity, and operational readiness during and after national emergencies.

This is a highly influential role for an experienced legal professional committed to access to justice, operational excellence, and the strategic advancement of publicly funded legal services.

Requirements:

  • Qualified attorney with at least three years post-call experience to the Bar in the Cayman Islands or a Commonwealth jurisdiction.
  • Minimum three years’ litigation experience across civil and/or criminal courts, including exposure to complex matters and appellate-level work.
  • Strong legal research, advocacy, negotiation and public law decision-making expertise.
  • Proven leadership capability, including staff supervision, team development, performance management and quality assurance.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple complex matters with professionalism, ethical integrity and high productivity.
  • Exceptional communication, influencing and partnership-building skills, with a strong record of policy development, implementation and high-level reporting.
